Can you see into the future?

With the possible exception of a few gifted individuals with self-proclaimed abilities, none of us can see into the future. Much as you might like to look into a crystal ball and discover whether you'll find love, if your career will be fulfilling, or when you're going to die, you can't know these things. And naturally, the choices you make along the way will impact the outcome. Unfortunately, the unknown future can derail even the best laid plans, putting your young family or other loved ones at risk in the event of your sudden and unexpected demise. However, if you engage in asset protection, you can also protect your young family's future along the way. Should an accident occur tomorrow, you want to be confident knowing at least one thing: that your family is covered.

Accidents happen all the time

All you have to do is watch the news to see that accidents happen all the time. Just look at roadway stats and you'll find that car accidents alone are responsible for hundreds of deaths on New Zealand's roads each year, many related to driving while intoxicated. Even if you drive responsibly, there might be other drivers on the road who aren't as careful, and you could be the victim. And that's just one of the many unfortunate ways in which you could meet an early demise. What happens to your family when they're in mourning over your loss and they're without the income you provide?

Protecting your family is a good start

If you want to ensure that they're able to, at the very least, continue living in the home you've worked so hard to pay for, you can make sure they're covered by setting up a family home trust. This legal document will protect your main asset so that your loved ones won't have to worry about maintaining a roof over their heads while they try to figure out how to go on without you. As a responsible adult, it is your duty to plan for the future, even if you can't predict it, and a plan to protect your family home is a good place to start.

From there, you may want to look into other types of family trusts, especially if you happen to have additional assets that should go to the next generation. But don't wait too long to get started. As the newscasters will tell you, accidents happen every day. And when they happen to you, it's important to be covered.
