Your Lifestyle: How important is it to protect?

Posted: 10.01.2015

What does wealth and comfort mean to you?

Some people put a lot of time and effort into reaching and maintaining a certain level of wealth and comfort. It may not be the lifestyle of the rich and famous, with champagne wishes and caviar dreams, as Robin Leach would say, but so long as your young family is comfortably well-off, you're content. Of course, there are people who will happily make do with less, as well as those who always want more. No matter where you fall on the wealth spectrum, however, chances are good that you'll get used to living with a certain level of affluence. And unless you want to risk finding yourself significantly less wealthy, you need to take steps to protect your home, your assets, and your lifestyle. And a family trust could be the key.

What are your odds of picking yourself up again?

But how important is it, really, to protect your lifestyle? It depends on two things. Firstly, what are the odds that you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and recover from a major tragedy that results in a loss of wealth? And second, do you also need to protect your young family's future? While most people are relatively confident about their ability to care for themselves should they suffer job loss or medical issues that cause them to lose a home or other assets, you might not be so keen to put family members like a spouse and children at risk in the process. For this reason, it is imperative that you engage in asset protection by creating a family trust.

How long can you last without an income?

If you fail to protect your family home appropriately, you and your family members could find yourselves in a very precarious situation should the breadwinners in the home lose their jobs, fall ill, or have a major accident. With no money coming in and/or medical bills piling up, your home and assets could come under fire, potentially leaving you penniless in addition to everything else that's gone wrong. And what if the worst should happen and you suffer an untimely death? Without a family home trust in place to ensure that your home is passed along, the lifestyle you have carefully cultivated for your family could be swept away.

Is your lifestyle important to you?

Preserving your own lifestyle may or may not be terribly important to you, especially if you feel confident in your ability to start anew and regain wealth (although you should seriously consider how the effects of injury or illness could hamper that plan). What may be more important is preserving the lifestyle your family has grown accustomed to. And when you plan to protect your main asset with a family trust, you can ensure that no matter what befalls you, your loved ones will have a roof over their heads.
